A Matter of Life: JPS Must Save Lives, Not Profits
Over 150 ACT volunteers helped gather research for our study on the Tarrant County Hospital District and the JPS Health Care Network.
Led by Dr. Ann Sutherland, the group visited schools, clinics, health fairs, churches and neighborhoods gathering information. Coulpled with academic research, information from other Texas counties and financial analysis, the report paints a dramatic picture.
The JPS System has built a wallet bigger than its heart. Dozens of lives could be saved and thousands of lives improved if the county would set aside $10 million from its profits (over $160 million in three years) to open clinics on a sliding fee basis to families earning slightly more than the federal income caps for assistance and opening the clinics to all low-income county residents, including immigrants.
